David is a third-year undergraduate at Corpus Christi College, reading
Chemistry. He began playing the trumpet at the age of eight, progressing
to performing with Birmingham Schools’ Symphony Orchestra and the
Academy Chamber Orchestra. He was Principal Cornet of the Birmingham
Schools’ Brass Band.
At
Oxford, he has primarily been active as a singer. In his first year
he performed with the a cappella group Out of the Blue, during which
time the group won the European final of the International Competition
of Collegiate A Cappella, performed at the Lincoln Centre in New
York City and completed a one-month sold-out run at the Edinburgh
Fringe. In February 2010 he participated in the ambitious project
to perform the entirety of the album 'SMiLE' by Brian Wilson (of
Beach Boys fame) in concert.a
He has taken leading roles in six Gilbert and Sullivan operas, variously
in Oxford, Birmingham and at the International Gilbert and Sullivan
Festival. Most recently he played the role of Boland, Prince of
the Moors, in Schubert’s little-performed opera “Fierrabras” at
the Taylorian Institute. He has performed a selection of Sullivan’s
serious songs in recital for the Sir Arthur Sullivan society.
In his capacity as a conductor David was the Musical Director for
“The Pirates of Penzance” with OUG&S. He currently conducts Oxford
University Brass Band, Oxford University Wind Orchestra, UCMS Chorus
and a singing group at St. Peter’s Church, Wolvercote.
He makes occasional excursions into piano accompaniment, having
played for “The Pirates of Penzance” in Oxford, “The Mikado” at
the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and "The Sorcerer" in Birmingham.
